Yoga teacher training in Bali at House of Om
House of Om is a yoga school that runs 200-hour yoga teacher trainings, and its Bali course is a 20-night residential programme at a campus in Ubud. I completed my 200-hour training with House of Om in Bali after I left New York.
In 2024 I traded the pace of New York for travel across Asia. Along the way I sat a 10-day Vipassana retreat and completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training with House of Om in Bali. The longer version is on my page about how I came to teaching.
This page is about the training: what House of Om is, what its 200-hour course in Bali covers as the school publishes it, and what a training like this does and does not make a teacher. If you are a beginner wondering whether I can teach someone who has never stepped on a mat, the answer is yes, and private yoga for first-timers is how most students start with me.
What is House of Om?
House of Om is a yoga school that runs teacher trainings in several places. Its 200-hour course in Bali is held at The Mansion, a campus in Ubud. The school also lists courses at other venues in Bali, in Koh Phangan in Thailand, in Rishikesh in India, and online.
House of Om describes itself as a Registered Yoga School, or RYS, with Yoga Alliance, the membership body many schools and teachers register with.
What does the 200-hour course in Bali cover?
On its course page, House of Om lists these subjects for the 200-hour training at The Mansion:
- Asana: Hatha yoga, Vinyasa flow and elements of Ashtanga, with alignment and adjustment labs
- Philosophy: including the eight limbs of yoga and the yamas and niyamas
- Anatomy and physiology
- Teaching methodology and sequencing
- Pranayama and mudras
- Meditation and yoga nidra
- Shatkarma, the yogic cleansing practices
- Mantra and kirtan
- Ayurveda principles
- Sound and voice work
- Karma yoga, or service
The course is 200 hours of instruction and ends with practical and theoretical exams.
What does a training day look like?
The school publishes a full daily schedule. The day starts at 6:00am with shatkarma and chanting, followed by asana and pranayama from 6:30 to 7:45am. Mid-morning brings practice labs, breakfast and philosophy. Afternoons are given to teaching methodology, alignment and adjustment. Evening practice and dinner close the day at around 7:30pm.
It is a long day, over three weeks. That rhythm is part of what a residential course is: you live inside the practice for a while instead of fitting it around everything else.
What does a 200-hour training make me, and what not?
It makes me a yoga teacher with a 200-hour training behind me. I say it plainly, because the words around teacher training are easy to blur.
- A registered school is not a registered teacher. House of Om’s standing with Yoga Alliance belongs to the school. Registering as a teacher is a separate step a graduate takes for herself, and I have not taken it. I describe what I hold as it is: 200-hour trained at House of Om, Bali.
- It is not a medical qualification. I am not a physiotherapist, a doctor or any kind of medical professional, and a lesson is never treatment.
- It is a beginning. I began teaching in 2026. What I bring to a lesson is the training, more than eight years of my own practice, and my full attention on the person in front of me.
For pregnancy and the months after birth I trained separately, and that training is described in what my prenatal and postnatal certification covered.
How does the training show up in a lesson?
Before there were studios, a teacher looked at the person in front of them and changed the practice to fit. That is how I teach. A training gives you the shapes, the sequencing and the words for them. Choosing which ones a particular student needs on a particular morning is the part I do in the room.
Most often that means Yin yoga with long, supported holds or breath-led Vinyasa, both built on Hatha shapes. If you want to know what that word means, what Hatha yoga is is a short read.
Thinking about a yoga teacher training in Bali yourself?
I cannot rank schools, and I will not. These are the questions worth asking any school, House of Om included, before you pay a deposit:
- Where exactly is it held, and is it residential? A course at one venue can run differently from the same school’s course at another.
- How many hours, over how many days, and what does a typical day look like?
- What does the curriculum cover, and how much of it is practice teaching?
- Who teaches it, and how many students are in a group?
- How are you assessed, and what certificate do you receive at the end?
- What is the school’s standing, and what would you need to do yourself afterwards to register as a teacher, if you want to?
- What happens if you fall ill or have to leave early?
Read the school’s own pages for the answers, and check them again before you book, since courses change from year to year.
