Maybe you are not flexible. Maybe you have not exercised in years, and the thought of a studio full of people who already know what they are doing makes you want to stay home. None of that is a reason to wait. It is exactly who private lessons are for.
I am 200-hour trained at House of Om, Bali, and I have practised yoga for more than eight years.
What your first lesson includes
A private lesson is 90 minutes, at your home, condo or office. We start by talking: what made you want to try yoga, how your body feels, anything that hurts or has been injured. Then we learn a small number of basic shapes slowly, with props to make each one easier, and I show you how to breathe while you hold them.
You will not be asked to touch your toes, stand on your head or hold anything you cannot. If a shape does not work for your body, we change it until it does. Every lesson finishes with savasana, a mini massage for the neck and shoulders, and sound healing to close, so even a hard day ends lying down.
Who beginner lessons suit
Beginner lessons suit anyone starting from zero or close to it: people who feel stiff, people who have not moved much since school, people who tried a class once and felt lost, and people who simply prefer to learn without an audience. Men are as welcome as women, and a private lesson for two suits anyone starting with a partner.
Once you know the basics, you can keep going at your own pace. Some students move on to Vinyasa, linking movement to breath, because they enjoy getting warm. Others prefer the slower floor work of Yin, with its long holds, or fully propped restorative lessons.
If you would like to read a little before you book, where to start with yoga covers the basics in plain language.
If you have a health condition, an injury or you are pregnant, check with your doctor before you start, and tell me what they said.
How booking works
Message me on Viber. It is fine to write something as simple as “I have never done yoga and I am quite stiff.” Tell me where you are in Metro Manila and roughly when suits you, and we agree a time. You can check the areas I travel to first.
A first lesson works anywhere with a clear patch of floor: a family sala for yoga lessons at home in Kapitolyo, a condo living room for yoga lessons at home in Mandaluyong, or a shaded garden for yoga lessons at home in Forbes Park and Dasmariñas.
Questions about yoga for beginners
I am really unfit and inflexible. Can I still start yoga?
Yes, and a private lesson is the easiest place to do it. Nobody is next to you, nobody is watching, and the lesson is built for your body, not the fittest person in the room. Stiffness is where most people start.
Is a private lesson better than a beginner class for a first-timer?
It depends on you. A class is a good way to try yoga with others. A private lesson suits you if you would rather learn the basics properly, at your own pace, without feeling watched or rushed.
Do I need to prepare the room before my first lesson?
Only a little. Clear a patch of floor about the size of a mat, with some space around it, and let the household know you will be busy for a while. I bring the mats and props. Wear something soft you can move in, and bare feet are fine.
How many lessons does a beginner need?
There is no fixed number. After one lesson you will know a few basic shapes and how to breathe through them. Many beginners like to book lessons regularly for a while so the basics settle in, but that is up to you.
Which style of yoga is best for a beginner?
Whichever suits how you feel. If you want to move and get warm, we start with simple flowing work. If you are tired or stiff, slower floor work. In your first lesson we can try a little of each.
Do you teach men as well as women?
Yes. I teach men on their own, men with a partner, and men in a group of friends or colleagues. A private lesson means nobody is watching, and every shape is changed to fit your body rather than the other way round.
