Wellness activities for employees: what works in a Manila office

A tidy wooden desk with a mug and a notebook, an office chair beside it and a rolled yoga mat leaning against the desk.

Good wellness activities for employees in the Philippines are simple, regular and easy to join in office clothes: yoga classes, desk stretching, sound baths, walking groups and short talks. The best choice depends on your space, your schedule and what your team will actually turn up for.

Most HR teams in Metro Manila do not need a large budget or a new department to offer wellness. They need a few activities people can join without fuss, run on a schedule that respects the working day.

Why a wellness program in the first place

Part of the reason is policy. DOLE Department Order No. 208, series of 2020, issued under the Mental Health Act (Republic Act 11036), sets guidelines for private-sector workplaces to adopt a mental health workplace policy and program. Activities like the ones below are not a substitute for that policy or for professional support, but they can sit alongside it as the everyday, visible part.

Activity types that work in a Manila office

Yoga classes

A yoga class is the most flexible option on this list. A 30-minute desk-side class happens where people sit, standing and seated, with no mats. A lunchtime class of 45 to 60 minutes fits in a meeting room with the tables pushed back. A slower Yin class suits the end of a demanding week. A good teacher offers options throughout, so beginners and people who wear office shoes all day can join in. Workplace yoga in Metro Manila runs in all three formats.

Desk stretching breaks

Five minutes of guided stretching for the neck, shoulders, back, wrists and hips, done at the desk. Our 5-minute desk yoga reset is a sequence your team can follow on its own.

Sound baths

In a sound bath, people sit or lie down and listen while bowls of metal or crystal and other instruments are played. Nobody has to move, stretch or know anything in advance, which makes it a good choice for teams who are shy about yoga. It needs a quiet room and around 30 to 45 minutes. See sound bath for how one runs.

Walking groups

A walking group costs nothing and builds connection across departments. In Metro Manila, plan early morning or late afternoon routes, and use covered walkways or a mall loop in the rainy season.

Talks and workshops

Short talks on sleep habits, posture at the desk, managing a heavy workload or using your HMO benefits give people information they can act on. Keep them under an hour, invite questions, and choose speakers qualified for the topic. A talk on mental health should come from a licensed professional.

Activities that support mental health at work

Mental health activities for employees work best when they are small, regular and easy to join quietly. None of them is treatment, and none replaces the policy above, but together they make it normal to pause during the working day.

  • Guided breathing and short meditation. Five minutes at the start of a meeting or after lunch, sitting at the desk. How to meditate, one quiet minute at a time is a plain place to start.
  • Slow movement classes. A gentle class or a Yin class gives people a break from screens without asking them to perform. For staff who feel on edge, gentle yoga for anxious days, and its limits explains what a practice can and cannot do.
  • Protected breaks. A real lunch away from the desk, and no meetings in one agreed hour, often matter more than any event.
  • Peer support and talks. Trained mental health first aiders and talks by licensed professionals help people know where to go.
  • Clear signposting. Put the employee assistance program, the HMO’s mental health benefit and a licensed professional’s contact where everyone can find them.

For employees who are already running on empty, private lessons for stress and burnout are one option to point them to, alongside professional care. If someone is in crisis or thinking about hurting themselves, the National Center for Mental Health crisis hotline in the Philippines is 1553, and emergency services are there too.

How to choose

Start with three questions.

  1. What space do you have? No spare room points to desk stretching, walking groups or a desk-side class. A meeting room or function room opens up lunchtime yoga and sound baths.
  2. When can people actually attend? If lunch is the only free hour, pick a format that ends with time to eat. For shift teams, schedule inside the shift.
  3. What will your team turn up for? Ask. Offer two options and run the more popular one first.

How to run them well

  • Set a day and time. “Every Wednesday at 12:15” is easier to protect than an ad hoc invite.
  • Get a manager to join. When a team lead attends, people feel allowed to step away from their desks.
  • Make it optional and easy. No sign-up hurdles and no pressure on anyone who prefers to sit out.
  • Sort the practical side. Book the room, check the air conditioning, set out water, and say in the invite whether mats are needed.
  • Include remote staff. An online link for people working from home keeps hybrid teams together, and a few office games like story chain or charades work on a call too.
  • Review after a few weeks. Look at who is coming, ask for feedback, and adjust the time or format before adding more.

Bringing in a yoga teacher

A teacher who comes to your office takes the planning off HR’s plate: the class is shaped to the room, the headcount and the time slot you have. Joahnna Lee teaches desk-side classes, lunchtime classes, Yin classes and wellness days with sound healing across Metro Manila, from corporate yoga in Ortigas to workplace yoga in Quezon City, and she brings experience from a corporate advertising career in New York to working around a busy office calendar. Every corporate class is quoted on inquiry, so start by sending your team size, location and the format you have in mind.

Questions

What is the easiest wellness activity to start with in the office?

A short desk stretching or desk-side yoga break. It needs no room booking, no mats and no change of clothes, and people can join from their own chairs. It is a low-risk way to see how your team responds before planning anything longer.

How often should we run wellness activities for employees?

Regular beats big. A weekly or fortnightly slot that people can plan around usually does more than a single large event each year. Start with one format, keep the same day and time for a few weeks, then decide whether to add more.

Should wellness activities happen during working hours?

Where you can, yes. Activities inside the working day, such as a lunchtime class or a mid-afternoon break, reach more people than ones that ask staff to stay late or come in on a weekend. Holding them on company time also tells the team the time is really meant to be used.

Does a yoga class count toward a mental health workplace program?

A yoga class can be one of the activities inside a program, but it does not meet the requirements of DOLE Department Order No. 208 on its own. The order asks for a written policy and program, which covers matters such as awareness, confidentiality and access to support. Treat classes as one part that sits alongside that policy, and check the details with your HR or legal adviser.
